SYNOPSIS OF COUNCIL MEETING
2nd JANUARY 2002
This was attended by 5 Officers, 6 Deanery Representatives and 2 Co-opted members of Council.
- Chairman’s Report:
- This was tabled – deanery reps have copies.
- NACT/WYETH Travelling Fellow 2002:
- Only 1 application received. This was considered and sent to North Carolina for their comments. Both panels agreed not to award the Fellowship this year – CT’s encouraged to apply for 2003. Article to be prepared for Clinical Tutor providing info on previously successful applications. Dr John Parry III, the AHEC Travelling Fellow, will now come over in March 2002.
- MEETINGS:

- Joint Meeting with ASME at RIBA 26/2/02 – All CT’s encouraged to attend - theme adapting medical education to shift working.
- AMEE – 29/8 -01/9 2002 – Lisbon – NACT will be running usual workshop with Drs Thomson, Long and Mr Smith facilitating. All CTs encouraged to attend.
- 5th Joint Conference 10-12 July 2002 – Bournemouth. Programme has fewer plenary sessions but more working groups. NACT AGM will be at 5.30 p.m. on Thursday 11th July. CT’s encouraged to attend.
- Winter – 30th November, 2001 RSM.- Positive feedback – topics praised for being good “mainstream” CT business. CT Forum suggestion it could be nominated Deanery lead.
- Spring 8/9 May 2003 – To be held at the Newton Hotel 4-5 miles from airport. Prof Sir Graeme Catto asked to speak. Dr Ieuan Davies to keep Chairman informed.
- Winter Meeting 2003 – Joint Meeting with NAMEM – venue to be decided – RSM being refurbished.
- Spring Meeting 2004 – Trent Deanery possibly Pilgrim Hospital – Dr Sagar to check suitability.
- Spring Meeting 2006 – Possibly Northern Ireland – Dr Burnside suggested Dublin in case of trouble.
- Courses:
- All running well and fully booked. Extra Part 1 ECT Course 25-27 June 2002 at Farnborough Hospital. Deanery reps to keep NACT office informed of new DCT and ACT’s.
- Refugee Doctors Liaison Group:
- Liaison group grown from 20-80 members. Refugee is a doctor who technical has official refugee status. BMA website useful with database of 400 members. Guidelines for clinical attachments being devised.
- SCI45:
- This will be advertised in Clinical Tutor for PGMC’s to make their own decision.
- ABPI:
- Plans are in hand to revive a shorter European Travelling Fellowship.
Reports from other Bodies:
- COPMeD:
- Prof. Hill reported NHS plan is the primary driver of current DoH agenda. Manpower planning & reform of training in SHO grade awaiting publication of SHO modernization report expected end of January. Genuine political will to expand consultant nos but no additional funding as yet. Work continuing on the Working Time Directive. Progress towards MPET levy continues. A need for infrastructure and protected time for educators is being recognized by the Centre. Strategic Health Authority Executive Boards have mostly been appointed. Workforce Development Confederations have generally good relations with Deaneries. PG Deans contracts maybe standardised

- NAMEM (formerly NAPMECA):

- RCPath:
- To be removed as no representative.
- RCOphth:
- Problems of PSC over newly appointed consultants who had received RITA G’s and CCST in serious difficulties in their posts due to being inadequately prepared for service workload.
- RCP:
- No report – Dr Byatt to put out feelers for representative.
- RCA:
- No report.
- ASME:
- Way forward for multi disciplinary Education & Training discussed at meeting in December. Enthusiasm for developing confederation of organizations with an interest in medical education. Possibility “ambush” by doctors in training of Joint Meeting on 26th Feb due to lack of input into the agenda.
- BAMM:
- No report.
- JCPTGP:
- Much debate over response to consultation paper whether General Practice regarded as “family practice” or a medical specialty in European law. Lay visitors being trained as members of inspection panels.
- UKCEA:
- Dr Sagar agreed to be representative.
- APMS:
- No report.
- Libraries:
- No report.
- International Forum:
- Little of relevance discussed since last meeting.
- RCN:
- interested in establishing stronger links – Chairman to meet and assess.

- now called NAPCE – trying to create broad group rather than small factions.
- RSM:
- looking for Associate Dean
- AOB:

- Replacement for of NHSE Council member – next year
- Mrs Ingham Clark now Medical Director so stepping down from NACT Executive. Mr Smith now acting Treasurer
- CD Rom version of www.appraisalskills.com is being distributed via Deaneries – any feedback to Dr Long
- NACT looking into other facilitators for ECT Part 3.
