SYNOPSIS OF COUNCIL MEETING
11th MAY 2001
This was attended by all 6 Officers, 11 Deanery Representatives and 3 Co-opted members of Council.

Chairman’s Report:
Dr Alistair Thomson informed Council that there have been 4 main areas of activity since January’s report:

  1. Office:
    a) manned more per week
    b) PGCTs database being upgraded
    c) Website updated and supported via the Office
    d) NACT forum on DoctorsnetUK website undersubscribed - this is a closed forum - only members from NACT or closely affiliated with NACT and Med. Ed allowed and application for access immediately granted to NACT members.

  2. Courses and Training:
    a) all courses well subscribed but not all PGCTs attending. All Assoc. PGCTs should also complete the ECT Course.
    b) NACT are considering an ECT "part 4" course to augment 1-3 - if so what? - Workshop on difficult counselling problems or information on multi-disciplinary agenda of MEd Ed? - Or a refresher course for CTs.
    c) Chairman has attended PGCT mtgs. in 2 Deaneries so far - Mersey & North West East. Wessex will be visited shortly and wants to arrange more through Council deanery Reps.

  3. Dr Thomson has attended COPMeD regularly. Last meeting was in March where priorities for the coming year are as follows: Modernisation of SHO grade, Induction of a national system of assessment of training grade doctors, Implementation of the RITA process.
    Training of a cohort of assessors for the RITA process in each deanery, Preliminary work with Workforce Development Confederations on training capacity in primary care and higher specialist training; Workforce planning to solve
    a) Flexible hours funding crisis
    b) Implementation of the EU working time directive.

  4. Consultation processes on Revalidation for the GMC; The new proposals for the future of the GMC; The GMC’s 2nd edition of the booklet "Good Medical Practise" and The GMC’s deliberations on the Privileges and Obligations of registration; The SHO Modernisation working party - radical changes are expected; Prof. Liam Donaldson’s conference on organ retention prior to both his and the Redfern report on the Alder Hey pathology scandal.
NACT/WYETH Travelling Fellow 2002:
Dr Long is revising the paperwork for the fellowship. The AHEC Travelling Fellow is Dr John Perry III, MD, Professor of Medicine in North Carolina College of Medicine and is interested in Evidence Based Medicine. He arrives late September - any offers of hosting to Dr A Long.

MEETINGS:

  1. Spring Meeting feedback - agreed Swansea had been a successful meeting
  2. AMEE - 2-5 September 2001 - Berlin NACT running workshops for Directors of PGME Group - info now out. All CTs encouraged to attend.
  3. 5th Joint Conference 2002 - Venue for the meeting is Bournemouth; next meeting shortly.
  4. Winter - 30th November, 2001 RSM. Title "New World of Education and Training - Opportunity or Threat" programme in process of being devised. All CTs encouraged to attend.
  5. Winter Meeting 2002 - 29th November at RCP - members to note date in their diary.
  6. Spring 8/9 May 2003 - Inverness.
Courses:
All running well and fully booked. Looking into running extra ones to accommodate demand.
Training & Resource Pack:
As now on the website this item will be dropped from the agenda for a while.
COPMeD:
Prof. Hill highlighted a few points:
  1. SHO modernisation will move very quickly. CMO chairing working group - clear support for training SHO’s in 6-8 foundation programmes of 3 years duration. Consultation document due around July
  2. SWAG technically disappeared - no replacement as yet. Money available for 120 new PRHO’s nationally to be filled by October 2001-additional money for new posts in a number of specialties.
  3. Revalidation of trainees will be Deanery responsibility - hence need to develop SHO RITA programme. Possible effects of empending general election and planned reduction in number of HA from 99 to 33 only speculative at this stage.

  1. Dr Kwee Matheson was proposed for Honorary Membership - agreed
  2. Chairman advised that Dr Fred Woodroffe’s health is not good and NACT has sent their best wishes to him.
  3. Dr Long advised that video clips for www.appraisalskills.com are on CD-ROM as they were difficult to download via NHSnet - any feedback to be sent to him.
  4. Mrs Litherland asked that Deanery reps provide her with an up to date list of their Tutors and Associate Tutors ASAP.
